Today is finally here! School will be over and summer vacation will begin! Students and teachers worked in their rooms before the Prayer Service at 10:00. Fr. Hurlbert, Mrs. Polega and the third grade helped us to think of our mission to do God's will and to help others. We celebrated teaching anniversaries, teachers who are moving on and Ms. Rafa, who is retiring! We are enjoined to "Go and Make a Difference!"

Today our student body attended the 8:15 mass for a special reason – today is May Crowning. The 2nd graders, most of whom are recent First Communicants, lined the main aisle holding white flowers. The statue of Mary  near the ambo was crowned with a wreath of flowers. The students then processed forward to place their flowers in vases to honor Mary, Queen of Heaven.

Ascension students have prepared all year for this day! Their colorful, one-of-a-kind banners have been displayed in the school. Our First Eucharist masses began on Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 and continued on Sunday at the 9:00 and 11:00 masses. Next weekend the final group of children will receive for the first time on Saturday, May 12 at the 5:00 PM mass. Congratulations to these loving children, parents and catechists. May you grow closer to Jesus every day!

Grandparents arrived at Ascension at 8:30 this morning for Open House.Visits to classrooms made children and grandparents very happy! In the Pine Room, a photographer was available for family pictures, and then a marvelous reception with refreshments was held in the gym. The entire student body and grandparents (and parents!) attended mass at 10:30, enhanced by the angelic voices of our Choristers. Students "spelled out" the reasons that grandparents are so special. Then most children went out to lunch with their favorite relatives!

Today's Mass for Peace closed with a moving ceremony prepared by the 8th graders. Introductory remarks reminded us of the school tragedy on February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas School. A central lit taper burned as one by one seventeen 8th graders came forward to light a candle. A reader proclaimed the names and details about the lives and hopes of those who died. The school congregation solemnly watched as the candle-bearers placed themselves around the church.

Tomorrow, March 14th, is a day when students nationwide will be walking out of class to bring awareness to school violence. Ascension School will instead be showing our solidarity through prayer. Our eighth grade students have carefully prepared an all-school Mass for our entire community to promote peace, and will memorialize the 17 victims of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The Mass will be held at Ascension Church at 9:30 am. All are Welcome.

Students, staff, parents and young siblings gathered at 10:00 today to hear the Word proclaimed and to learn how to honor Ash Wednesday with Valentine's Day. Fr. Hurlbert introduced the story of the Sacred Heart of Jesus image, and encouraged us to answer when Jesus asks us to "Be mine."

Congratulations to 4th graders, Ms. Rafa and Mrs. Douglass for presenting a wonderful costumed pageant of the story of salvation from Adam and Eve through the prophet Isaiah. Mr. Anderson led the student body in O Come, Emmanuel and other carols of Christmas. All the pictures are in a Gallery.
