We take great pride in our commitment to differentiated education and the use of technology at Ascension School to provide educational opportunities in our school. We think that classical education is very important and incorporating technology into this classical approach provides students with a very practical hands on approach to use of technology, so cursive is just as important as keyboarding. Our primary grade classrooms, Kindergarten to 2nd grade have a computer class once a week, 3rd through 8th grades have computer class twice a week. We also emphasize digital citizenship and responsible use of technology at each grade level while using the Archdiocese of Chicago' Office of Catholic School approved curriculum provided by Common Sense Media .
Our primary grades (K through 3rd Grade) spend most of their computer class time with computer activities that supplement and differentiate what they are learning in the classroom. They are introduced to keyboarding skills, internet search skills and learning to navigate the internet safely and efficiently. Our middle school grades (4th through 8th grades) are introduced to Google applications such as DOCS, DRIVE, GMAIL, SHEETS, and SLIDE. They learn to use these tools in their classroom and their teachers have integrated Google Classroom to their classroom curriculum. We also teach our students to use MICROSOFT software such as WORD, EXCEL and POWERPOINT so they are prepared to use these applications because they will need them to be successful in their future educational experiences.
We have also integrated Computer Science into our Computer Class curriculum beginning with introducing the Hour of Code program to our Kindergarten classes and then continuing with the Code.Org curriculum to our 1st grade classes through 5th grade classes. In this curriculum the students are taught the basics of the Java Script computer language by using block based coding instructions. We also have the students use Scratch to supplement our block based coding curriculum. Our 6th through 8th grade students are introduced to Java Script line based coding through the Code Combat curriculum. This curriculum is a game based instructional software that is self paced and teaches typed line code to our students through game based activities. The students are self motivated and are eager to expand their knowledge and understanding through the activities provided by the application.
We also provide extra curricular and enrichment activities such as Technology Club that participates in First Lego League robot competitions using LEGO EV3 robot kits. We also have had Code, Play, Learn provide educational opportunities in technology with mobile application, robotics and other programing sessions afterschool.
